🌾 Guyana’s Sugar Industry Heritage
The sugar industry has been the backbone of Guyana’s national economy for over a century, supporting the livelihoods of more than 20% of the country’s rural population and contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings.
The 8400 TCD (Tons of Cane per Day) Skeldon Sugar Mill, located in the Berbice region of eastern Guyana, represents the cornerstone of Guyana’s sugar industry modernization initiative. As the largest single-line sugar mill in the Caribbean region, it processes over 2.5 million tons of sugarcane annually, producing approximately 240,000 tons of raw sugar and valuable byproducts such as molasses for rum production.
RFI was entrusted with the design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of the mill’s critical bagasse conveying system and boiler workshop, delivering a turnkey solution that has transformed the mill’s operational efficiency and energy self-sufficiency.
⚠️ Operational Challenges Prior to RFI Intervention
The Skeldon Sugar Mill faced significant operational challenges that limited its production capacity and profitability.
Frequent Blockages
The outdated bagasse handling system suffered from frequent blockages and breakdowns, causing costly production interruptions during the critical harvesting season.
Low Thermal Efficiency
Conventional low-pressure boilers had a thermal efficiency of only 52%, resulting in excessive bagasse consumption and frequent fuel shortages.
High Operational Costs
The mill was forced to rely on expensive imported fossil fuels, increasing operational costs and hindering production targets.
✅ RFI’s Comprehensive Solution
RFI addressed these challenges through a comprehensive, integrated approach that combined advanced material handling technology with high-efficiency boiler systems.
